Presidential candidate Muharrem Ince has withdrawn from the election. Ince was forecast across various polls conducted in the month of May to receive an average 2.33% of votes. Now that he has withdrawn, new research suggests that 49% of votes for Ince will go to Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who on average is predicted to receive 48.2% of the total vote. He must receive over 50% to be selected in the first round.
CHP-affiliated mayor of Antalya province Muhittin Bocek was attacked by a group of AKP supporters during a campaign visit to small business owners in central Antalya, resulting in a minor skirmish between young followers of the two parties. Bocek stated: “The AKP Youth harassed us, provoked us. I wanted everyone to remain calm.“ Some of those involved in the fight were injured.
A local journalist in the Can region of Canakkale province was severely beaten by MHP affiliate Hasan Dinc for reporting the fact that Dinc had hung a controversial election poster equating Kilicdaroglu to Kurdish nationalist party member Selahattin Demirtas on a building associated with the Grey Wolves (Çanakkale Ülkü Ocakları İl Başkanlığı). The journalist recounted that Dinc had called to ask him to drink tea, then struck him right after shaking his hand.
“Will you kill me like you did Sinan Ates?“ he asked. Dinc responded “Yes!“
The Turkish Grey Wolves are a right-wing political organization continuous with the Νationalist Movement Party (MHP), which is in the People’s Alliance (Cumhur Ittifaki) with Erdogan’s AKP. Ates is a former president of the Grey Wolves who was murdered on December 30, 2022 by an unknown gunman in Ankara province.
