Climate activists Atlas Sarrafoglu, 16, Seren Anacoglu, 20, and Ela Naz Birdal, 17, filed a lawsuit against President Erdogan and the Ministry of the Environment, Urban Planning and Climate Change (Çevre, Şehircilik ve İklim Değişikliği Bakanlığı) on grounds of non-compliance with the Paris Agreement.
The defendants are accused of emitting greenhouse gases at a rate set to violate the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 degree Celsius limit on global temperature increase.
Two groups beat each other with fists and sticks near AKP and CHP election stands in central Gaziantep province. Stones were thrown in the altercation, and CHP municipal representative Ersin Atar fired shots into the air “in order to prevent a man’s lynching.” Four CHP Youth members were admitted to hospital.
CHP-affiliated mayor of Izmir province Tunc Soyer called for a march along the streets of central Izmir “in the name of prosperity and democracy.“ Participants carried torches and Turkish flags, shouting and singing patriotic songs.
A CHP election vehicle carrying presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu was stoned by a teenage boy after Kilicdaroglu’s rally in Eskisehir province. The boy was taken into custody but released shortly after, as Kilicdaroglu decided not to press charges.
He said: “Do not let our son’s name be spoken to anyone… This child is the child of Türkiye. Elections come and go; it only matters in the end that no harm comes to him. I do not blame him for his actions, but rather those who use him to provoke us.“
